Jamie Whincup will be issued with a ‘please explain’ from Australian motorsport’s governing body following comments made after the controversial Race 24 at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) will issue a letter to the Red Bull Holden driver after he criticised race officials following a Safety Car controversy in Sunday’s race at Pukekohe.

The 36-year-old will be given the opportunity to respond to CAMS’ letter before any possible sanctions are handed down.

Bathurst 1000: James Courtney, Jack Perkins, Bathurst podium

Published

on

Few could deny Walkinshaw Andretti United, James Courtney and Jack Perkins deserved their Bathurst 1000 podium.

Long-time driver Courtney is leaving for a new team at season’s end after a sustained period of lowly results. Perkins was battling with an influenza B virus. The team had axed its title sponsor after it went into receivership. Courtney hit the wall in the race, for God’s sake.

Through so much pain, the gain ended up in a first Bathurst podium for Courtney since 2008, and Perkins’ first overall, placing his famous family name back on the rostrum his father Larry reached 12 times.

Bathurst 1000: Alex Premat Bathurst win, latest news, Scott McLaughlin

Published

on

In his first season as a full-time Supercars driver in 2012, Alex Premat suffered heat exhaustion ahead of a Sydney 500 race, and was replaced by a teenage Scott McLaughlin.

Seven years later, the duo combined to win the greatest race of them all, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, and did shoeys on the podium as the crowd chanted “Frenchy!”

Talk about coming full circle, right?

While many plaudits were reserved for the all-conquering McLaughlin, Sunday’s result marked a special day for expat Premat, who claimed the first Bathurst win by a Frenchman, and just the seventh all-time by a European.

Bathurst 1000: Officials explain Fabian Coulthard safety car controversy, Scott McLaughlin Bathurst win, latest news

Published

on

Motorsport governing body the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has explained the team orders rule breach charge against DJR Team Penske in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Fabian Coulthard was given a drive-through penalty for driving slowly during a Safety Car period, dramatically holding up those behind. As the #12 slowed, the gap between third-placed Coulthard and eventful winner Scott McLaughlin in P2 blew out from one to 47 seconds.

An inquiry at the circuit after the race lasted more than two hours, and another hearing will be held at the next event on the Gold Coast on October 25-27, with the team and the Deputy Race Director to compile further evidence.

According to the CAMS statement, the inquiry was triggered following an in-race interview during the broadcast by team boss Ryan Story, and the “extraordinary increase” between cars #17 and #12.

As such, the result of Sunday’s race will remain provisional.
