EPL: Chelsea transfer news, Cesc Fabregas to Monaco, Thierry Henry

Published

on

Struggling Monaco has boosted its relegation fight by signing experienced midfielder Cesc Fabregas from Chelsea until June 2022. The deal reunites Fabregas with Thierry Henry, who played with Fabregas at Arsenal and is now Monaco’s coach.

Fabregas has been used to being near the top of the league during spells with Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea. But with Monaco it will be totally different as he goes straight into a relegation scrap, with Henry’s side mired in 19th place ahead of Sunday’s trip to face sixth-place Marseille.

Given Monaco’s precarious position, and his ability and experience, Fabregas could go straight into the side.

“It’s a great pleasure to join Monaco, a new project for me,” Fabregas said.

“I’m here to help the team and I’m impatient to start. We have a big game against Marseille on Sunday, I’m very excited.”

Asian Cup 2019, Australia v Palestine, Socceroos news, Chris Ikonomidis

Published

Look out Asia, Australia are just getting started.

That’s the message from Chris Ikonomidis after Australia kickstarted their Asian Cup defence with a 3-0 win over Palestine in Dubai.

The 23-year-old made the most of being handed a start by coach Graham Arnold, providing assists for Awer Mabil and Aposotolos Giannou in a bright display.

While thrilled to bring his strong A-League form into the international game, Ikonomidis says the team’s response to their opening-game defeat to Jordan is far from all the team can achieve.
