Canadian GP 2018: Winnie Harlow flag chaos explained

Published

on

FORMULA 1’s governing body the FIA claims the chequered flag mix-up at the Canadian GP was a result of simple miscommunication, but insists it will “review procedures” for future races.

The flag, which marks the end of the grand prix, was waved a lap too early on Lap 69 — though fortunately race leader Sebastian Vettel realised the error and carried on at full pace to take victory.

The mistake also meant the race was officially declared as 68 laps long with the final two laps erased, and the FIA has sought to explain the incident.

“It was a miscommunication between the start platform and the guy they call the starter here,” said FIA race director Charlie Whiting, via Reuters.

“He thought it was the last lap and asked them at the top to confirm it, they confirmed it. They thought he was making a statement when in fact he was asking a question.”

Departing MotoGP rider Scott Redding has fired shots at the series, saying his won’t miss the “atmosphere” or “the general attitude” around the paddock.

The Brit, who has been a part of MotoGP since 2013, will be leaving for British Superbikes next year with his Aprilia ride being taken by Andrea Iannone.

Sunday’s MotoGP in Valencia will be his final race, but Redding insisted he wasn’t upset to be leaving given how his fellow riders are “closing themselves off” in an expletive-laden rant.

“I don’t really like the whole atmosphere of this place at the moment as it is. The fans have been great, I can communicate with them so good, that’s more important to me at this moment.

Three drivers are in the hunt for the driver’s title in the final round of the FIA World Rally Championship, while any one of four drivers – including yours truly – in the CAMS Australian Rally Championship could claim the national title in the forests around the Coffs Coast.

In the closest fight in 15 years we’ve been forced to wait until the final round of the WRC season to see who the champion driver of the year will be.

Sébastien Ogier, Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak are separated by just 23 points.
