A LIVERPOOL player just couldn’t wait to rub Manchester United’s noses in their shock Champions League exit as some startling stats emerged about just how meek the loss to Sevilla was.
Plus all the other fall out from this morning’s Champions League action including a furious reaction to a timewasting ball kid…
It’s UCL Extra Time!
MO SALAH’S UCL CHEEKY TWEET
It was just 15 minutes after Manchester United had been knocked out of Europe’s top club competition when Mohamed Salah decided to jump on Twitter.
The Liverpool star’s words, and emoji, said it all in a cheeky tweet that will have endeared himself further to his supporters. Incredibly, it already has over 24,000 retweets and 50,000 likes.
BRUTAL REACTION TO UNITED’S EXIT
If Salah’s tweet wasn’t rubbing it in enough, there have been some really glaring stats emerge from United’s UCL exit.
Incredibly, since the Red Devils last won a knockout stage Champions League match — March 2014 with a 3-0 win over Olympiacos back when David Moyes was in charge — the following has occurred:
* Real Madrid have won the UCL three times
* Leicester City have won promotion to the Premier League, and then won the Premier League, and then beaten Sevilla in the Round of 16
* Chelsea have won the Premier League twice, including with Jose Mourinho as manager
* RB Leipzig have gone from the German 3rd division to the Champions League.
And still, despite Mourinho’s — and Louis van Gaal’s before him — huge financial backing in the transfer market, it is David Moyes who remains the most successful manager United have had in the UCL since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
SHAKHTAR PLAYER’S BALL KID BUST UP
While most eyes were on the main game of the morning, there was plenty of action in Roma’s 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.
The win means the Italian side progress on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate win, which left club legend Francesco Totti rather pleased.
But it was the actions of Shakhtar player Facundo Ferreyra that raised a few eyebrows.
The former Newcastle United flop, ironically nicknamed ‘Chucky’, got himself involved in a scuffle just 10 minutes from time after he decided to shove a Roma ball kid over an advertising hoarding.
Ferreyra was angered by the kid’s attempt at time wasting as Shakhtar chased an equaliser and, incredibly, only received a yellow card for his act!
SANCHEZ COPS IT FOR BAD PERFORMANCE
There have already been strong calls for Alexis Sanchez to be dropped after another poor showing for his new club.
As the Chilean started in United’s 2-1 loss to Sevilla, Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has said Sanchez’s arrival in the starting XI has hurt Mourinho’s side.
“At the start of the season, Manchester United had a fluency to them,” Nicholas said after the loss.
“Paul Pogba played high up with Jesse Lingard behind him and Romelu Lukaku on his game.
“All of a sudden Sanchez comes, Marcus Rashford gets dropped out and Anthony Martial gets moved over. All of a sudden the whole team is getting squeezed to fit Sanchez in.
“Sanchez, at the moment, does not deserve to be in the team. It’s too individual. He is giving the ball away too often.
“I’m sure a lot of Manchester United fans must be looking and saying ‘when is he going to do something for us?’
“He looks as though he is trying hard, but this is Manchester United and you’ve got to deliver on a game-by-game basis and he is not.”
