The FIA confirmed a data server crash in race control was the reason behind the Drag Reduction System (DRS) being disabled for the first third of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Introduced in 2011, DRS is normally enabled on Lap 3 of races, but the FIA spotted the issue just prior to the third lap at the Yas Marina Circuit, and alerted teams of the drama.

The issue was resolved on Lap 18 of the 55-lap race, which was dominated by world champion Lewis Hamilton.

His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas started plumb last in 20th, but managed to recover to fourth by the chequered flag.

Abu Dhabi F1 GP, F1 news 2019, Martin Brundle column, Lewis Hamilton, F1 DRS fail

Another Formula 1 season sails past at a scary pace, our traditional post-season Sky F1 team photo under the floodlights on the Abu Dhabi start straight seems to come around every six months.

Being generous, that was a slow-burn race which gathered excitement towards the end, as is often the case on the Yas Island layout.

In theory, a slow T7 hairpin leading onto a long straight, which is followed by a clumsy but slow chicane onto another effectively long straight, should generate some organic overtaking. Both those straights also have DRS drag reduction zones for the rear wing, although on this occasion that system failed due to a server crashing for the first 18 laps of the race.

Charles Leclerc has added further intrigue to Lewis Hamilton’s future by revealing he would welcome Britain’s six-time world champion to join him at Ferrari.

Hamilton’s next move was the subject of intense speculation at the final round of the campaign in Abu Dhabi after Ferrari admitted for the first time that they want to sign the Englishman.

Hamilton, whose STG 40 million ($A76 million)-a-season Mercedes contract expires at the end of next year, did little to play down Ferrari’s flirtatious advances by refusing to rule out a move to the famous Italian team.
