It wasn’t as dominant as his wet-weather showcase in 2008, nor did it require a surge through the field like in 2016. Few on the grid have suffered a more frustrating year than Pierre Gasly, who broke through for a maiden podium at Interlagos in a moment he described “the best day of my life”.

Gasly was dumped by the senior Red Bull team during the summer break after toiling through 11 races in which he was outclassed by the established Max Verstappen. He also suffered personal heartache when he lost friend Anthoine Hubert in a Formula 2 crash at Spa in August.

Gasly’s remarkable charge to second in Brazil was testament to his determination, and his screams over team radio when he crossed the line justified how much the moment meant to him.
