Indy 500 2019 news: McLaren, Fernando Alonso, Zak Brown, crash, video, latest, F1

The comedy of errors that doomed McLaren’s disastrous return to the Indianapolis 500 began months before Fernando Alonso failed to qualify for the race. How bad was it? A week before Alonso’s first test in the car, the team realised it didn’t even have a steering wheel.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown acknowledged Monday the team was woefully unprepared and small oversights snowballed into the final result. Bob Fernley, the head of the operation, was fired hours after Alonso missed the race and Brown returned to England to digest the embarrassment of his venture.

Brown on Monday provided The Associated Press a detailed timeline of the bloopers and blunders that led to Alonso missing the race, the last piece the two-time Formula One champion needs in his quest to win motorsports’ version of the Triple Crown.

“I don’t think we came into this arrogant, I think we were unprepared,” Brown said. “We didn’t deserve to be in the race and it’s our own fault. It’s not like we showed up and gave our best. We defeated ourselves.”

After starting fourth for the race, Jack Miller was elated — and rightfully so — to claim a well-deserved third podium of the season in a challenging Aragon Grand Prix.

The Australian finished third behind runaway winner Marc Marquez, who extended his championship lead to a whopping 98 points over Andrea Dovizioso with five races remaining.

While it was the same story for a dominant Marquez, who claimed his fifth win in Aragon, Miller’s third-place finish was no such formality.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2019, Charles Leclerc angry, F1 news 2019, Sebastian Vettel win

The rumblings of a rivalry may have been born in Singapore after Charles Leclerc told Ferrari his second-place finish behind teammate Sebastian Vettel was “unfair”.

The comments were born out of frustration as pole sitter Leclerc finished second to Vettel, with an undercut allowing the German to take his first victory in over a year.

Leclerc led the opening stanza of the race, which ran at a slow pace as he looked to save his tyres. However, Ferrari pitted Vettel first, and the solitary lap was enough for a successful undercut.

They say it’s the hope that kills you.

However, Marc Marquez’s rivals are running out of that too.

Marquez’s dominant performance on home soil in Aragon all but helped the reigning world champion to a sixth premier class crown, with the Repsol Honda rider checking out to victory from pole by 4.836s.

Marquez’s championship lead extended to 98 points with five races remaining, but Andrea Dovizioso’s clinical charge to second proved the fight is still there.

However, the hope is all but gone, with Marquez barely working a sweat to take a crushing victory, while Jack Miller battled to a well-earned third podium of 2019.
