F1 news: Niki Lauda death, drivers pay tribute, Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo

Published

Legendary Formula One driver Niki Lauda’s death aged 70 has triggered an outpouring of praise for a man whose track victories and comeback from a horrific crash enthralled race fans worldwide.

Lauda died at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland on Tuesday (AEST) surrounded by his closest family members, a spokesperson told AFP.

His death comes eight months after he underwent a lung transplant. An Austrian news report said Lauda — who also had kidney transplants — was hospitalised for a dialysis earlier this month in Switzerland.

Walter Klepetko, who performed the lung transplant at Vienna’s general hospital last year, said there was no specific cause of death.

“It was a long process, and the patient reached his end. Niki Lauda fought. He was a great man. But it has been clear for some time that we cannot bring him back to the ‘race track’,” he was quoted by the Austrian news agency APA as saying.

F1 news, Austrian Grand Prix 2019: Daniel Ricciardo, Renault, Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg, next driver, latest

The identity of Daniel Ricciardo’s next teammate could rest on whether or his boss at Renault, Cyril Abiteboul, can “restore his image as a gentleman”.

Ricciardo has another year and a half left on his current contract with the French manufacturer but his teammate Nico Hulkenberg sees his deal expire at the end of the season.

As a result, Renault are keeping their options open in the driver market despite the role Hulkenberg has played in the team’s return to the sport over the last two-and-a-half years.

F1 news, Austrian Grand Prix 2019: Daniel Ricciardo, Renault, Red Bull, Pierre Gasly, advice, results, French GP

Daniel Ricciardo has dished out the advice to his under fire replacement at Red Bull, Pierre Gasly, following a tough start to the season.

Gasly has only managed to accumulate 37 points so far this season and finished outside the points during Sunday’s French Grand Prix – his home race – only to be promoted to P10 after Ricciardo’s penalty.

It is only Gasly’s second year in F1 after his promotion from Toro Rosso, a move Ricciardo made himself earlier in his career, although his rise was far more smooth that his successor’s.

F1 news, Austrian Grand Prix 2019: Daniel Ricciardo, Renault, Nico Rosberg, Hulkenberg contract, French GP, latest standings

Former world champion Nico Rosberg believes Daniel Ricciardo has already proven that he needs to be back competing for world championships in a top team again after “dominating” his new Renault teammate.

The Australian had a rocky start to the season but has put together a string of strong performances, which should have culminated in a P7 finish in France last weekend, until he was handed two five-second penalties and consequently stripped of his points for the race.

That means he remains on 16 points for the season, compared to the 96 he had at this point last year, but has won a lot of plaudits for his aggressive overtakes in what has been an otherwise dull season.
