F1 2019: Mercedes dominance, Daniel Ricciardo, Ferrari; Sebstian Vettel

Published

on

We witnessed a fifth Mercedes 1-2 in five races, on the back of their five seasons of championship dominance. That’s as impressive as it is challenging as we crave some variety and surprises in F1.

I woke up feeling a little disappointed on Monday morning after what may apparently be the last Spanish GP for a while. Frustrated with Mercedes, Ferrari, and Formula 1 itself.

Mercedes for being so damned good at everything F1 these days.

A vast group of calm, mature, experienced, professional people, all rowing in the same direction and resourced and empowered to dominate their rivals. The cut-and-paste nature of their dominance is painful right now, always remembering that over the decades one team has often dominated for a while, be it Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, Red Bull, Renault, Lotus, and so on.

F1 Monaco Grand Prix 2019: Sebastian Vettel crash, Ferrari, video, watch, results, Practice 3, latest news

Sebastian Vettel had a less-than-ideal start to what is the most important qualifying session of the year in Monaco as he plunged his Ferrari into the wall.

The German ruled himself out of FP3 just 15 minutes into the session after a lock up at Sainte Devote saw him go straight into the barrier, leaving him audibly annoyed as he swore repeatedly over the team radio.

That means Ferrari have plenty of work to do to get the car ready for qualifying which begins just two hours after the culmination of FP3.

Welcome to FOX SPORTS’ live coverage of the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo’s return to the principality was not a particularly happy one compared to 12 months prior as he ended Practice 2 as the fourth slowest person on track, with teammate Nico Hulkenberg not faring much better.

The Aussie, who topped every practice and qualifying session in 2018 before leading the race from start to finish, is hoping that Renault can reverse the changes they made to his car prior to FP2 but is confident he can pull out something special on Saturday night.
